Desi names, a clearly chosen convention
Desi and Punjabi describe a family of regional calendar practices, not one interchangeable algorithm. These pages use the fixed Nanakshahi solar month starts published by Pal Singh Purewal. The same month names also appear in traditional Bikrami calendars, whose dates can differ.
How the Nanakshahi year is counted
The year begins on March 14, the first day of Chet. From that day, subtract 1468 from the Gregorian year to obtain the Nanakshahi year. Before March 14, the date still belongs to the previous Nanakshahi year.
Sangrand and the month boundary
Sangrand means the opening day of a month. The fixed calendar keeps the listed Gregorian starts stable. Phagun contains an additional day when the February inside it is a leap February. It is not correct to assume every final month always has exactly 30 days.
Why another calendar may disagree
Traditional Bikrami solar calculations and revised Sikh festival calendars may use different dates. We do not relabel a fixed Nanakshahi result as an exact Bikrami date. For a Gurpurab or community gathering, check the calendar issued by the organization you follow.
Using the calendar in daily life
The English, Urdu, Gurmukhi, and Hindi names help compare family records and seasonal references. A month’s cultural association with weather or agriculture is context, not a weather forecast or a planting recommendation.
Pakistan cities: one civil time zone
Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, Sialkot, and Gujranwala all use Asia/Karachi for the civil date. Selecting a city labels your result; it does not model local moon visibility or sunset.
Frequently asked questions
What dates are shown for March 2, 2018?
The fixed Nanakshahi date is 19 Phagun 549 NS. The calculated Hijri date is 14 Jumada ul Thani 1439 AH, using a manual adjustment of 0 day(s).
Is the Islamic date an official Pakistan moon-sighting date?
No. It is a tabular civil Hijri calculation. Follow the local Ruet-e-Hilal announcement for official month beginnings. The adjustment control changes the calculated display only.
Are Desi, Bikrami, and Nanakshahi calendars identical?
No. They share regional month names, but their rules can differ. These Desi and Punjabi pages use fixed Nanakshahi month starts, and do not claim to reproduce traditional Bikrami astronomy.
Can I convert a date back to the English calendar?
Yes. Choose Nanakshahi, civil Hijri, or Indian National (Saka) in the reverse converter and enter a complete year, month, and day. Invalid dates are rejected.
